The Book Companion Terms

Version v2-2026-09-02

The terms of The Book Companion, Resmind's free version, in plain language. They incorporate the Data Processing Agreement and reference the sub-processor list. You accept them by uploading your file next to the acceptance notice on the upload page.

1. What The Book Companion is

You upload a book or another body of work you own, and Resmind builds and hosts an AI version of it that answers your readers' questions with citations back to your pages, at a link of its own. This is The Book Companion, Resmind's free version, called the free version below. It is free for your first readers, within the limits described below.

These terms, together with the Data Processing Agreement they incorporate (resmind.app/trial-dpa), govern the free version. You accept them by uploading your file next to the acceptance notice. We record the acceptance, with the version of these documents, in your Book Companion's own audit log.

2. Your content stays yours

You retain all rights to your content. Uploading transfers nothing.

You grant Resmind a limited, non-exclusive license to store and process your content solely to provide your AI to you and your readers. This license ends when your Book Companion ends or your content is deleted, whichever comes first.

Your content is never used to train any AI model. Not by Resmind, and not by our AI provider, whose API terms exclude training on API data.

3. Your promise about rights

By uploading, you warrant that you own the rights to the uploaded content or act with the rights holder's permission, and that making it available through the free version violates nobody's rights. If a rights dispute arises from your upload, that responsibility is yours.

4. Roles and responsibilities

For your readers' personal data, you are the data controller and Resmind is your processor. The Data Processing Agreement at resmind.app/trial-dpa is part of these terms and governs that processing. Your Book Companion's privacy notice names you as the controller, using the name and email from your signup.

Under the EU AI Act, Resmind provides and operates the AI system and you deploy it toward your readers. The notice that readers are talking to an AI is built into the product and cannot be removed. Resmind maintains it so this obligation is met for every Book Companion.

5. Your readers

Readers join with an email address. The service is for adults: readers confirm they are 18 or older when they sign up.

Reader conversations belong to the reader relationship you control. Resmind does not use them for anything beyond running the service, and never sends conversation content by email.

6. Free version limits

The free version covers a limited number of readers and a fair-use amount of AI answering, currently 10 readers with a monthly question allowance per reader. When all reader spots are taken, existing readers keep their access and new readers see a notice that the spots are full.

We may adjust these limits for new Book Companions at any time. Limits for a running one are only ever raised, not lowered.

7. Not advice

The AI answers from your book. It is not a doctor, therapist, lawyer, or financial advisor, and its answers are not professional advice. The product tells readers it is an AI and that it can make mistakes. You agree not to present your Book Companion as a source of medical or other professional advice.

8. Deletion, by default

You can delete your Book Companion at any time from your dashboard. One action removes your book, the AI, every conversation, and its database, permanently.

Deletion also happens by default: if your Book Companion sees no reader activity for around three weeks, we email you a notice, and about a week later it and all its data are deleted the same way. Any reader activity, or a reply to the notice, keeps it alive.

9. Acceptable use

Do not upload content you have no rights to, content that is unlawful, or content designed to make the AI produce harm. We may suspend or end a Book Companion that breaks these terms; where content rights are disputed, we may take it offline while it is resolved.

10. The service, as it is

The free version is provided free and as is. We work hard to keep it accurate, fast, and available, and we do not promise any of those things for a free service. To the extent the law allows, Resmind's liability under the free version is limited to the amount you paid for it, which is zero.

11. Changes and contact

If these terms change, the version and date below change with them, and material changes are announced by email to every author with a live Book Companion. Questions go to info@resmind.io and are answered by a person.
